Scottie Scheffler has earned his third major title, running away with the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow by five shots.
Scheffler’s bag is largely identical to the setup he used to win his first title of the year two weeks ago at the CJ Cup Bryon Nelson, except for one key swap.
This week, Scheffler was one the whopping 61 golfers who opted to add a high-lofted fairway wood — in his case, a 7-wood which he refers to as his 5-wood — to help hit higher shots into Quail Hollow’s par-5s and long par-3 6th.
“This week may be more of a 5-wood week just because, like you said, the golf course is going to play really long, the rough is thick, and the run-up areas after this kind of rain are going to be really soft, and the greens are still going to be really firm because they’re new,” he said Tuesday. “You have to be able to land the ball up on the green. You can’t really run it up around this golf course. That’s one aspect that you’ve got to think about.”
3 gear trends at PGA Championship that caught my eyeBy: Johnny Wunder
Scheffler first put a 7-wood in play at Torrey Pines for the Genesis Invitational, but brought it back this week to help him get out of the thick wet rough.
In testing, the 7-wood launched 1.5 degrees higher than Scheffler’s 3-iron which he uses most weeks and had 1500 RPMs more spin. TaylorMade Senior Tour Manager Adrian Rietveld, who was busy this week with a lot of 7- and 9-wood builds, told GOLF the high-lofted fairway woods can be so valuable because they serve dual purposes by increasing land angle and helping players get out of the rough.
Rietveld bent Scheffler’s 7-wood a degree upright compared to how he played it at Torrey Pines.
The other major change for Scheffler was that this was his second week since switching back a Vokey .06 Low Bounce K-Grind lob wedge. Scheffler had played the Low Bounce K in early 2022, when he got his first four PGA Tour wins and first Masters title, before gaming the narrower .04T Grind in his 60. The World No. 1 re-inserted the Low Bounce K before the Byron Nelson and is now 2-for-2 with the new lobber.
While Scheffler’s ball striking seemed uncharacterically leaky for him this week (he was still 14th in strokes gained: approach), his scrambling was sharp as ever, and he was fifth in the field in strokes gained: around-the-green (4.832).
At the top of the bag, Scheffler still plays the TaylorMade Qi10 (DOT) head he used most of last year, similar to Rory McIlroy. McIlroy became the center of attention this week for reportedly switching to his backup driver head, although this is a fairly common occurance in professional golf. In speaking to Golfweek Sunday, Xander Schauffele revealed that Scheffler “switched to his backup too.”
Backup or not, asside from a few pulls on the front nine Sunday, Scheffler’s driver was a weapon, finishing fifth in the field in strokes gained: off-the-tee (4.835).
